Just Like My Daddy: Reflections for Father's Day 2025

I was a Daddy’s girl. I loved my dad. I loved that I looked like him.
He was a great man. A generous man. A godly man, who was honorable and well-respected. Qualities for sure to be emulated.
I learned a lot from him…just by watching him. Keeping my eyes on him.
Are you a father? (Even if you’re not, I hope you’ll keep reading. This applies to all of us.) When you look at your child, do you see yourself? Does your child “have” your eyes, your nose, your mouth, your build, your hair?
Does your child have some of the same mannerisms, talents, or interests as you? Does s/he try to imitate you – walk like you, talk like you, act like you? Does s/he follow Daddy around like a little shadow? Little kids love to imitate. That’s how they learn.
Only by close interaction and contact with a parent will a child pick up the same habits, tendencies, and character. Father, have you thought about what you are teaching your child, even without saying a word?
Therefore, remember, you are God’s representative on earth to that child. He or she will learn about the attribute of God from you. Scary thought, huh?
And so it is with all of us. Our heavenly Father says, “I will be a Father to you, and you will be sons and daughters to Me, says the Lord Almighty.” (2 Cor. 6:18 RGT)
To learn to be like God the Father and His Son, we must be constantly in His presence, following Him around like a little shadow.
When God looks at you, what does He see? He sees you as His child, made in His own image. If He made us all in His likeness, then we must put on His behavior and act like Him. We are His Name’s sake, His family. We are to uphold that Holy Image.
Just like our Brother Jesus copied His Father, we are to be like our Heavenly Father. Do what He does. Walk like He walks. Say what He says. To be like Him as much as we can.
Paul told the Roman church, “For God, in His foreknowledge, chose them to bear the family likeness of His Son, that He might be the eldest of a family of many brothers.” (Rom. 8:29 Phillips)
In his letter to the Ephesian church, he said, “Therefore be imitators of God [copy Him and follow His example], as well-beloved children [imitate their father].” (Eph. 5:1 Ampc)
The Father desires His children to learn of Him, to listen to Him, to obey Him, and just to be with Him. But until we sit at the feet of the Source of Peace, we will not resemble the Father of Peace or our Brother, the Prince of Peace. This is true with all the other qualities of God.
I want to be like my heavenly Daddy. In order to do that, I need to keep my eyes on Him.
May our desire and prayer be to be like our heavenly Father, with feet to walk like Him, a tongue to talk like Him, a heart like His that is full of love and compassion, with eyes full of kindness and to see the good in others, ears to always listen, that our children and others may know the Father and desire to be like Him because of our example.
May your heart always yearn to be like your heavenly Father...Lynn
