A Love Letter to God: Responding to God’s Love for Us

Love God

In the Easter post we talked about what God wants from us and from the Bible was answered this question by saying:

God wants to have a committed and intimate relationship with us

Easter week’s post:

This week I want to look at the response the Bible shows us we should have. None of us have absolutely perfect relationships with each other. They are all hindered by sin, so it would be right to say they all have a degree of dysfunction. In some relationships, it might be very slight and in others, it could be toxic or abusive.

Unfortunately, we carry that baggage into every other relationship we have, including the one we have with God. We know what a healthy love of God looks like from the Bible. If you were to write a love letter to God right now, would it have some of the following sentiments?

My Dearest God,
Everlasting to everlasting, You are my Lord and my God (Joshua 22:5, Psalm 41:13). You are all glory and honor; Your name is majestic, and Your holiness is beyond compare (Psalm 29:2). Your greatness is beyond measure (Psalm 145:3). You never change (Malachi 3:6) and I can always count on you even when the same cannot be said of me (2 Timothy 2:13). You always fulfill your promises (2 Peter 3:9).
Considering all that you have created and done, it boggles my mind that I am worth so much to you (Psalm 8:3-4). You created the earth for me to inhabit (Genesis 1:26). You have watched over me from my beginning (Psalm 139:13) and You continue to watch over me (Psalm 139:1-5, Luke 12:6-7).
I do not deserve you; I never have (Romans 5:12, Romans 6:23). But You love me anyway (Romans 5:6-8). I was cut off from you and I had no hope of getting to You (Ephesians 2:1). Your Son suffered and died in my place (Isaiah 53:5) to give me righteousness that allows me to be close to You (1 Peter 3:18). Then Jesus rose again so I can be close to You forever (2 Corinthians 4:14, Revelation 21:3).
I listen for Your voice; I am Yours, and I will follow You. (John 10:27)
My soul deeply longs for You, my whole being thirsts for You! (Psalm 42:1-2) Your presence fills me with joy! (Philippians 4:4) I seek Your face, desiring to be close to You (Psalm 27:8). I would rather be with you for one day, even as a doorkeeper, instead of a thousand years anywhere else (Psalm 84:10). If I had to pay for the privilege, it would be worth all that I own and more (Matthew 13:44-46).
It's my heart's desire to love You with all my heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37). I wish I could love you like you love me. (John 15:13, Ephesians 3:19). Thank you for holding me close and never letting me go (Romans 8:38-39). I can never thank you enough (Psalm 40:5).
Your Beloved Child (Galatians 4:6, Psalm 13:5)

There are many reasons to love God for who He is (worship) and what He has done and continues to do for us (praise). But we can also just love Him and be in His glorious Presence as we will get to enjoy, in full, throughout eternity.

There may be parts of that love letter, especially the level of intimacy, that seem strange to you. There was a time some of it seemed strange to me too. However, as you can see every phrase is backed biblically which means with the help of God, it is all achievable if we want it.

I hope this post will challenge you to work on your relationship with God and draw closer to Him (James 4:8). None of us have it exactly right and we all have work to do.
